I join my fellow Canadians in urging our federal government to enact stronger global warming laws and policies.

What You Can Do

Global warming is the biggest collective action challenge the world has ever faced. Many of the solutions are at hand but we need our national leaders to work together and get the job done.

Economic Stimulus? Tell the party leaders it must be Clean, Green Stimulus

Write all the party leaders (you can send the letter below or, even better, write your own). Tell them that if Canada is going to spend billions on economic stimulus, then use that money to ramp up the economy of the future.

If you'd like to write your own letter, consider asking them to match at least Barack Obama's proposals:

  • Green Jobs: create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years

  • Green buildings: make all new buildings carbon neutral, or produce zero emissions, by 2030; Weatherize one million low-income homes each year for the next decade; Make new buildings 50% more efficient over the next four years

  • Clean vehicles: Increase fuel economy standards by 4% each year and put 1 million Plug?In Hybrid cars – cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon – on the road by 2015

  • Eliminate global warming emissions: Legislate an economy-wide cap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050

Or you can send the following letter to all leaders automatically:

To: Stephen Harper
To: Michael Ignatieff
To: Gilles Duceppe
To: Jack Layton

Re: Stimulus? Clean Stimulus!

Dear Sirs,

Canada's economic stimulus must prioritize green jobs and the clean economy. Let's have Canada beat Barack Obama's proposals for:

  • Buildings: a massive jobs program to retrofit federal buildings and low-income homes.

  • Provincial-Federal clean energy: a "Clean Fund" to drive a provincial-federal ramp up of renewable energy.

  • Clean vehicles: require stringent fuel economy standards and get plug-in hybrids on the road.

  • Transit: if we are going to spend billions on infrastructure, let's prioritize low-emission public transit.

These initiatives create jobs and stimulate our economy. This is an opportunity to fight recession, fight global warming and vault Canada into the global green economy.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
