A year ago this week I returned home from Bali and the UN Climate Change meeting knowing unless something was done, the words of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon would forever haunt me. "Preventing global climate change", he said, "is the moral challenge of our generation. Failure to act could send the human race into oblivion".
PowerUP Canada - Canadians for Climate Leadership had its genesis at that very moment. Launched nine months later in September 2008, PowerUP is now an unprecedented coming together of citizens from all walks of life, including many people who have never before been involved in fighting global warming. With our unique voice calling for "Laws not Light Bulbs", and joined by five former Prime Ministers, business, academic and opinion leaders, PowerUP Canada has experienced an exhilarating and intense year as we launched our initiative amidst an earlier-than-anticipated national election, followed by a worldwide economic crisis.
Never before has there been a greater need for vision and leadership at the highest level to ensure we have stronger global warming laws, and a strong economy. Canadians understand that a bold, green stimulus package is needed to kick-start the economy. We can ramp up clean energy, or a massive new jobs push to retrofit buildings, just to name two examples.
